Is Chiropractic safe?

Yes.  In fact, Chiropractic health care is among the safest of all the healing arts. To better understand how safe Chiropractic is let's compare the safety of Chiropractic adjustments to the Medical treatment of neck pain. The most common medical treatment for neck pain is prescription anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, Aleve, Motrin, Advil, etc. According to published research, medical treatment of anti-inflammatory drugs is 100 to 400 times more dangerous than Chiropractic adjustments.  What that means is that you are 100 to 400 times more likely to experience serious injuries or dangerous side effects from Advil than with receiving Chiropractic adjustments.

Keep in mind that all forms of treatment have some risk to them. Even one tragic event is one too many.

Are Chiropractic Treatments Painful?

Although each patient reacts differently, rarely is the procedure painful. Many patients report that they feel a sense of relief and relaxation following an adjustment. Every patient responds differently. A variety of reactions ranging from temporary soreness to a sense of relief and well-being may occur depending on the individual.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

The intent of a chiropractic adjustment is to restore proper motion to the spine removing irritation to the associated nerves. There are several adjusting techniques that Doctors of Chiropractic can utilize in performing safe, specific adjustments. The Chiropractic adjustment differs from spinal manipulation due to its specificity. Chiropractors detect and correct vertebral subluxations. A subluxation is a condition that occurs when two bones of the spine misalign upon one another causing nerve compression. Such compression can  lead to decreased sensory and/or muscle function. Chiropractic is an art and science that restores proper nerve function throughout the body.

How Many Visits Does it Take?

The number of visits needed to correct a patient’s condition is almost entirely dependant upon the individual.  There are many factors that will determine the duration of one’s care plan. Every human body is unique. Some patients respond immediately while other patients may progress at a much slower rate. Other factors include: patient’s age, overall health, nutritional diet, how long the condition has existed, and the presence of degenerative arthritic changes. The most important factor in determining the speed of recovery is the patient’s ability to stay on a regimented care plan set forth by the doctor.  If a patient only comes for treatment when they feel like it, progress will be extremely slow or nonexistent. It is very important to follow the Doctor’s instructions for optimum results.

While under Chiropractic care your progress will be closely monitored and you will be re-evaluated at proper intervals. As you improve the frequency of visits will continually decrease until the doctor determines that the problem is corrected.

It is important to understand that symptoms, such as pain, may disappear before the underlying cause of the problem is fully corrected.  Following the care plan and advice of your doctor of Chiropractic is the best way to ensure optimum recovery.

What Can I Expect on My First Visit?

On your first Chiropractic visit you will meet with one of our doctors for an initial consultation.  A careful case history will be taken followed by an examination of the spine. X-rays may also be included. If yours is a Chiropractic case and we sincerely believe that you will respond favorably to conservative Chiropractic treatment you will be accepted as a patient. Your doctor will then discuss the results of your tests and explain your care plan.  At this time your doctor will answer any questions you may have.

Can Chiropractic Help Pregnant Women?

Yes. Many patients have noted a much easier pregnancy and less painful labor with chiropractic care. Our adjusting tables are specially equipped for the pregnant female, allowing them to lie comfortably in the face up or face down position. During the course of pregnancy pressure placed on the spine increases causing structural changes to the spine. This can irritate nerves causing spasms of the lower back muscles and sciatic neuralgia. This pressure can also adversely effect the function of reproductive organs which may lead to complications in the future.  Chiropractic has had tremendous success in the reduction of low back and sciatic pain associated with pregnancy. Taking care of the nervous system allows the powerful birthing muscles to coordinate better therefore being more efficient.

Why Do I Need To See a Chiropractor if I Do Not Have Symptoms?

Many people think that they are healthy simply because they are symptom free.  This is a huge mistake.  What most people don’t realize is that symptoms are usually the last thing to occur in the disease process. For example, if a child is infected with chicken pox the symptoms (pox marks) will not appear for over a week.  Furthermore, many degenerative conditions of the spine produce no symptoms at all.  For this reason we suggest you have your spine checked at least twice a year.

Why Would a Child Need To See a Chiropractor?

You may think that your child is invincible today, but the condition of their body 20, 30, or 40 years from now will result from decisions that you make today. Many of the contact sports and daily activities that your child participates in can interfere with the proper growth and spinal development. All of the "bumps" and "falls" your child receives during development may lead to spinal deformities later in life.“Prevention is worth a pound of cure.”

A good way for your child to develop into a normal, healthy adult is to ensure they receive proper rest, exercise, good nutrition, a positive mental attitude and of course, Chiropractic. Many of us wait until symptoms appear before we see a doctor(e.g. heart attack). We take our children to the Dentist regularly to have their teeth checked or to the eye doctor to have their eyes checked...why not assist their continued health through regular chiropractic treatments. Regular Chiropractic treatment of the spine allows for a properly functioning nervous system which in turn promotes improved function throughout the entire body.

At What Age Should a Person Have Their First Spinal Checkup?

Most Chiropractors deliver the first spinal checkup and adjustment shortly after birth.  During the birthing process a newborn’s spine undergoes a tremendous amount of trauma. In many deliveries a baby’s head will be rotated up to 180 degrees and pulled with a force of up to 75lbs. Such force can induce serious structural damage that if left untreated can cause complications later on in life. Therefore it is never too early to have your first spinal checkup.

How Often Should I Have My Spine Checked?

We recommend that you have your spine checked for imbalances at least twice per year. Proper spinal hygiene is very important in maintaining proper nerve function and overall health.
